The cutting-edge BrahMos hypersonic missile was launched from Indian naval destroyer INS Kolkata, BrahMos Aerospace, a Russian-Indian joint venture, said in a statement on Saturday.
The missile was launched using the company’s self-designed vertical pad.
Established jointly by India and the Russian Federation, the hypersonic BrahMoss cruise missile entered the Indian armed forces in 2005. The missile has a range of 290 kilometers, and is capable of carrying a warhead weighing up to 300 kilograms.
The INS Kolkata destroyer, the first in its class, was handed over to the Indian Navy in 2014, and two more are expected to arrive shortly.
All the three ships feature vertical launch pads for the BrahMos cruise missiles.
