British comedian and a political activist Russell Brand took an aim at Australia’s Prime Minister Tony Abbott earlier last week. Brand said the compulsory offshore detention and resettling of asylum seekers in other countries is against the ways of the modern globalized society.
Brand criticized Australia's policy of using offshore detention centers and accused Prime Minister of failing to understand Australia’s history.
"Stop the boats. What boats? All boats? No, just boats with poor people on them… Tony, why are there even white people in Australia? How did white people get to Australia?" Brand was saying in his video which has been uploaded to YouTube and viewed over 187,000 times.
The inmates wrote an open letter to Russell Brand thanking him for his webcast. The fragment of the letter which was published by the Guardian reads, "Please accept our heartfelt thank you for your efforts and publicity given to our plight… We are writing from Foxtrot Compound inside the Manus Island offshore detention center. Thank you for remembering us. Our voices are weak and nobody with any power listens to our friends and advocates. So for you to speak about us to such a wide audience is unique and heart-warming to us. Thank you so much."
