“From what I heard of the technical talks over the weekend, I am very skeptical,” Schaeuble said in an interview with German public broadcaster Deutschlandfunk, adding that a report to be released later on Monday will provide more information on the prospects for the talks.
EU finance ministers, European Central Bank President Mario Draghi and Greece's finance minister are expected to meet in Brussels on Monday to try and forge a common ground on Greece’s bailout program, which expires on February 28 and leaves the country on the edge of bankruptcy.
However, the minister underlined that Germany did not wish to see Greece exiting the eurozone, stressing that Athens needed to fulfill “minimal conditions” to gain EU support.
Greece’s new left-wing government has failed to negotiate a common solution on its bailout program with the so-called troika of international creditors, refusing to implement further austerity measures in exchange for loans and pledging to seek revision of its bailout terms, calling them a national humiliation.
