KIEV, (Sputnik) – The Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office has launched an investigation into a criminal case for the delivery of electricity to the Crimean peninsula, Ukraine's new Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin said Monday.
"In regard to Crimea, a criminal case is underway. It's being investigated," Shokin said during a briefing in Kiev.
Last month, Ukraine's Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk accused Ukraine's Energy Ministry of violating the country's interests when power company Ukrinterenergo signed a deal with Russian energy holding Inter RAO. Ukraine's interests are also being violated as Russia can unilaterally increase the price of electricity for Ukraine, while Crimea will enjoy a fixed tariff, Yatsenyuk said.
Last December, Inter RAO and Ukrinterenergo signed a one-year deal for the delivery of Russian electricity to Ukraine.
