MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The number of people killed during the civil war in Ukraine has topped 5,600, the Bloomberg news agency said Monday citing UN figures.
The previous report released by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) on February 26 put the death toll at least 5,486 people, including 59 children.
The conflict in southeastern Ukraine started in April 2014 when Kiev launched a military operation against local independence supporters.
Last week, the leaders of Ukraine, Germany, Russia, and France worked out a ceasefire between Kiev forces and pro-independence fighters. The warring sides must now exchange all prisoners and establish a buffer zone in the conflict area.
A similar agreement was signed last September. However, the fighting in eastern Ukraine continued and escalated further in the first few weeks of 2015.
