MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Swedish police are ramping up security near synagogues and mosques in the wake of the shootings that took place in the capital of Denmark over the weekend, the Local newspaper said Monday, citing Sweden’s Minister of Home Affairs.
“In the short term the police will increase their presence, but over a longer period of time we need to work together with the religious groups to help all Jews living in Sweden feel safe and secure,” Anders Ygeman said.
On Sunday, gunman Omar Abdel Hamid El-Hussein killed a person and injured two others in an attack on a synagogue in the Danish capital.
On Saturday, it is presumed the same shooter opened fire in a Copenhagen cafe during a debate on the role of art, blasphemy and free speech, killing one person and injuring three others.
The shooter was gunned down by police officers some hours after the attacks.
On Monday, Danish police charged two men with helping Hussein obtain weapons and dispose of them after the shootings.
