The accident happened on Tuesday at Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, during the annual Carnival as thousands of people flooded the streets for celebration.
According to eye-witnesses, the accident happened when someone used a pole to move a power line to allow a float to pass under it.
Unfortunately, the power line came into contact with the float, a flash of sparks erupted as the float was, in essence, temporarily plugged into the nation's power grid. While some managed to jump off the float, others were not so lucky.
"I saw the wire falling and sparks and I started running for my life," said Natacha Saint Fleur, a 22-year-old who was near the float at the time.
The General Hospital in Port-au-Prince confirmed 20 people were dead.
According to Nadia Lochard, a coordinator for the Department of Civil Protection, 46 were injured.
Investigators are still trying to find out what kind of pole was used to move the power line and why it conducted the electricity.
