NEW DELHI (Sputnik) — The Indian Coast Guard said in a statement Tuesday that a Russian merchant vessel had been apprehended as it tried to escape Indian waters.
"After a dramatic chase at high sea at around 110 nautical miles off the Indian Coast a Russian merchant vessel has been apprehended by the Indian Coast Guard," the statement said.
The ship's Russian crew decided to flee Indian waters after the High Court of India's Tamil Nadu state ordered its arrest in a commercial dispute on February 13. It was anchored 10 nautical miles off the coast of Mumbai, according to the Indian Coast Guard.
The vessel was informed about the arrest order by a coast guard ship on patrol through shore based monitoring stations. The vessel was also directed not to proceed without resolving the commercial dispute, as the matter was under litigation.
