WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – US House of Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is visiting Cuba together with eight congresspeople in order to build on US President Barack Obama’s initiative to advance US-Cuba relations, according to a statement by Pelosi’s office.
“This delegation travels to Cuba in friendship and to build upon the announcement of US normalization of relations and other initiatives announced by President Obama,” Pelosi said in the statement on Tuesday.
“This delegation will work to advance the US-Cuba relationship and build on the work done by many in the Congress over the years, especially with respect to agriculture and trade,” Pelosi said.
President Obama restored diplomatic relations with Cuba last December and vowed to ease the US-imposed trade, financial and travel restrictions on the island country.
The United States had imposed an embargo on Cuba in 1961 during the Cold War because of antagonism between Washington and the communist government in Havana.
