UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik)- Libyan Foreign Minister Mohammed Dairi at the UN Security Council session urged the international community to assist the country in fight against terrorism and, first of all, to arm the troops.
The UN Security Council is holding an emergency session on the crisis in Libya.
"The international community should render assistance in restructuring [the Libyan] army. First of all, to arm the troops," Dairi said Wednesday, adding that this requires lifting an embargo on weapon supplies to the Libyan government.
The embargo on arms supplies to Libya was imposed in 2011 over violence against civilian population during protests against the country's long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi.
On February 18, the permanent representatives to the Arab League held an emergency meeting, calling on the United Nations to lift the arms embargo imposed on Libya.
