White House said that Obama Administration plans to spend millions of dollars on new programs to counter violent extremism and radicalization in the United States.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Obama Administration plans to spend millions of dollars on new programs to counter violent extremism and radicalization in the United States, the White House said in a statement.

“We are announcing new steps to advance our whole-of-nation [countering violent extremism] efforts, including by… seeking $15 million in appropriated funding for the Department of Justice (DOJ) to support community-led efforts to build resilience and counter violent extremism,” the statement, issued on Wednesday, said.

The new funding also includes $3.5 million for “research and evaluation grants to address domestic radicalization to violent extremism.”

On Wednesday, the White House opened a three-day summit bringing together US President Barack Obama, foreign ministers, and US officials to discuss ways to counter violent extremism and radicalization.

The summit comes after the recent wave of deadly attacks carried out by extremists in Europe and the Middle East. Numerous radicalized citizens of the US and Europe have also travelled to the Middle East to join terrorist groups like the Islamic State and al-Qaeda.
