After the result of last year’s referendum that kept Scotland as a part of the UK, however, the country has at least managed to declare its independence online, by changing its government’s domain from “scotland.gov.uk” to “gov.scot”, Le Monde reports.
The idea to change the internet domain goes back to 2012, when then First Minister Alex Salmond predicted the change of domain would help the country to gain its independence.
“Scotland is well on the road to independence, and it looks like we will soon be independent in cyberspace too — the dotScot domain name will be a great boost in promoting Scotland around the globe.” – Salmond was quoted as saying.
According to the Scottish government, over 8,000 companies and organizations are already using the new domain.
