The ANSWER Coalition said on its website on Thursday it would protest in Washington, DC on March 21 against Obama's call on Congress for an Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) in Iraq and Syria.
"We are on the eve of what is being planned as a decades-long war – a war that will expand and grow," the group's director, Brian Becker, was quoted as saying on the ANSWER's website. "Although there was a promise by the President to 'limit' the war, that should be understood as merely a talking point to soothe a skeptical public."
Becker warned that the "open-ended US war" would have an impact not only on the people living in the region, but on the entire world.
Earlier this month, Obama asked Congress to formally authorize the use of military force against Islamic State. He said that systemic and sustained airstrikes would ultimately defeat the extremists.
A US-led international anti-IS coalition is currently carrying out airstrikes in support of local ground forces against the positions of Islamic State militants that have seized large swathes of Sunni-majority areas on either side of the Iraqi-Syrian border.
