A new flash of violence erupted in Pakistan Friday as five militants and one military soldier were killed in North Wasiristan, a tribal region near the Afghan border.
Pakistani security forces encountered rebels, presumably Taliban fighters, February 20, during a cordon and search operation near the Datta Khel area of North Waziristan. The area is notorious for harboring insurgents and criminals.
However, the area is off limits to journalists, so no details, outside of official statements, on the real state of affairs in the region and the identities of those killed were reported.
The zone has been on lockdown since Pakistani military launched an all-out offensive on insurgency June, 2014, after a Taliban attack on Karachi airport.
