A North Carolina mother of two was shot and killed by a police officer who was called to her home to remove two intruders.

Betty Saxton called 9-1-1 on Tuesday and asked police to help her remove the people, whom she knew, from her home in Gastonia, North Carolina.

While waiting for law enforcement to arrive, Sexton grabbed an antique musket to protect herself against the unwanted guests.

When the cops got to her house, they found her with the heirloom firearm in her hand.

According to Sexton's sister Debra Kennedy, her boyfriend told the cops that the gun was neither loaded nor functioning, and Sexton obeyed officers when they ordered her to put the gun down.  Her family says she was in the process of doing so when Officer LaDoniqua Neely shot and killed her, WCCB Charlotte reported.

“My sister would not hurt anyone,” Kennedy said. “That officer still shot my sister dead in the chest.”

Sexton was taken to a nearby hospital but died in transit.

Neely has been placed on administrative leave while State Bureau of Investigations conducts a probe into the incident.
