The federal Government Accountability Office (GAO) said the US Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB) must strengthen transparency and compliance with procedures, as currently the board lacks transparency and oftentimes does not follow its own procedures.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB) lacks transparency and often flouts its own procedures, the federal Government Accountability Office (GAO) said in an investigative report.

“The Board at DNFSB does not have meeting and voting practices that are transparent to the public,” the report said. “Some Board procedures are not consistently followed or do not align with Board practices.”

DNFSB advises the US Energy Secretary on safety at defense nuclear facilities. The GAO, a government body that monitors federal agencies on behalf of US Congress, concluded that DNFSB must strengthen transparency and compliance with procedures.

“GAO recommends, among other things, that DNFSB document its internal control assessment activities and implement a policy to publicly disclose the results of Board votes,” the GAO said. It added that DNFSB may limit opportunities for public participation by failing to conduct its business in open forums.

DNFSB is currently building ten new defense nuclear facilities at an estimated cost of $25 billion, according to the GAO.
