Satirical Magazine Charlie Hebdo Halts Publication Amid Threats
French-Moroccan sociologist and cartoonist of Charlie Hebdo magazine Zineb El Rhazoui has been receiving death threats on social media from individuals linked with the Islamic State.

El Rhazoui and her husband have been targeted for several days now. Thousands of supporters of the jihadist group posted online El Rhazoui’s personal details, pictures of her husband and sister, a map showing places she visits and pictures of Islamic State beheadings. Moreover, a hashtag on Twitter calling for the assassination of the journalist was created.

El Rhazoui was given police protection in France, however her husband who is currently in Morocco does not have the same privilege.

On the day of the terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo, El Rhazoui was on vacation. When she returned, El Rhazoui participated in the publication of “Journal of the Survivors”, published by Charlie Hebdo magazine the following Wednesday.

El Rhazoui is a well-known activist for human rights in Morocco, opposed to the rule of King Mohammed VI, and a strong advocate of secularism and anti-fundamentalism. During her recent trip to Canada, she said secularism is the only way that would allow people from different cultures live together.
