Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will take part in the United Nations Security Council open debate on international peace and security on Monday.

NEW YORK (Sputnik) — Lavrov is expected to meet UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York, where the sides may discuss Kiev's request for a UN-EU peacekeeping mission to be sent to the embattled southeast Ukraine.

Afterwards, the secretary-general is scheduled to meet Ukraine's Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin.

Following Monday's session, the two ministers are expected to take part in the so-called Normandy Four ministerial talks, which include German and French delegates, on Tuesday.

"The possibility of such a meeting is being worked out and may be held in a European capital; we're discussing Paris on February 24," a diplomatic source was quoted as telling RIA Novosti last week.

As part of China's UN Security Council presidency, the body is expected to hold an open meeting on February 23-24 to discuss compliance with the goals and principles of the UN charter.

The open debates will be held in commemoration of the 70th anniversaries of the end of World War II and the formation of the United Nations.

The Security Council presidency rotates monthly based on alphabetical order of the 15 member states' names.

In addition to China, Russia, the United States, France and the United Kingdom, the five permanent members with veto powers, the UN Security Council includes 10 non-permanent members elected on a bi-annual basis.
