A series of bombings rocked the Baghdad area in the biggest and most distributed attack so far this year.

A series of bombings in Iraq's capital Baghdad and on its outskirts killed at least 40 people and wounded dozens more on Tuesday evening, Iraqi officials told AP.

At least 25 people were killed in a twin car bombing in the southeastern Jisr Diyala suburb of Baghdad. A car bombing in Mishada, a town north of Baghdad killed four and wounded 12. In Youssifiyah, south of Baghdad, a bomb killed three. Two more were killed in Latifiyyah, south of the city. Another bombing hit a police patrol southeast of Baghdad, and another person was killed when a bombing hit a northern Baghdad neighborhood.

The attack is the biggest and most distributed of bombings perpetrated against Baghdad so far this year. Sectarian tensions have been rising since February 14 when a Sunni trial leader was assassinated by an unknown group. No group took responsibility for Tuesday's bombings.
