WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The number of purchases of new single-family homes in January fell by 1,000 from December, according to a US Department of Commerce statement.
“Sales of new single-family houses in January 2015 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 481,000,” the statement, issued on Wednesday, read.
Additional data suggesting low interest in home purchases are the low median sales price in January of $294,300 and the average sales price of $348,300. Both prices would be higher if there was more demand merited from consumers, the statement said. According to MSNBC, new single-family home sales account for 9.1 percent of the housing market.
With the resulting US consumer disinterest, the supply represents 5.4 months at the current sales rate, the statement concluded.
The statistics are seasonally adjusted, and will vary month to month in their annual rates, according to the statement.
