MOSCOW (Sputnik) As long as Israeli officials call Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas a "terrorist", peace talks are unlikely to take place, Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riyad Maliki said Thursday.

"As long as Israeli leaders say such things, obviously, process of negotiations is impossible," Maliki said during press conference at Rossiya Segodnya press center.

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has repeatedly called Abbas a political and diplomatic "terrorist", accusing the Palestinian leader of not being able or willing to resolve the ongoing conflict.

Palestinians seek to establish an independent state on the territories of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, partly occupied by Israel, and on the Gaza Strip territory.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict intensified in July 2014, with Israel launching Operation Protective Edge against Hamas forces in the Gaza Strip.

Earlier in February, during the Munich Security Conference, Maliki urged the international community to pay more attention to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and ways to solve it.

On February 18, leader of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine Nayef Hawatmeh said that the Palestinian Authority insisted on direct talks with Israel under the guidance of the UN Security Council’s permanent members.
