US Senators introduced legislation that would prohibit taxpayer funding for abortion.

WASHINTON (Sputnik) – US Senators introduced legislation on Thursday that would prohibit any taxpayer funding for abortion, according to a press release by US Senator Roger Wicker.

“US Senators Roger Wicker and Pat Roberts today introduced key legislation to enact a permanent, government-wide prohibition of taxpayer funding for abortion,” the release, issued on Thursday, said.

The senators pointed out that current US abortion policy requires annual passage in the US Congress, and the anti-abortion policies in place do not apply to Obamacare.

“Eliminating loopholes is critical to ensuring that no federal program, including those under Obamacare, is exempt from the prohibition,” Wicker said in the release.

Senator Roberts explained that Obamacare makes it difficult for consumers to know if healthcare plans they purchase cover abortions, which may contradict their values and believes.

“We ban all taxpayer funding for abortion, and we clearly inform consumers in health care exchanges which plans cover abortive services,” Roberts was quoted as saying in the release.

US President Barack Obama’s Administration strongly opposes legislation that would exclude abortions from private healthcare plans. The White House stressed that current federal policy, introduced by Obama via an executive order in 2010, prohibits the use of federal funds for abortion with the exception of rape, incest, or life-threatening cases.

In 1973, US Supreme Court ruled that it is a constitutionally-protected right for women to have abortion during an early stage of pregnancy.
