UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — In its latest attempt to establish a ceasefire in Libya, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) delegation met with the Libyan Dawn militia and agreed on the principle of a ceasefire in the country, the UN announced Sunday.
“The participants agreed on the principle of a ceasefire and underlined the need to end the bloodshed in Libya and engage in dialogue. The participants stressed that a peaceful solution through dialogue is the only way out of the crisis,” the UN statement published Sunday on UNSMIL's website said.
The talks in the Libyan city of Zuwara were held in the framework of preparatory security discussions, a process supporting the main political dialogue track aiming to reach a solution to the Libyan crisis.
A civil war in Libya erupted back in 2011, after the country's long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown. Internationally recognized Libyan authorities are currently fighting numerous militias, including Islamic State-affiliated extremists.
