Forty police officers were wounded in clashes with protesters at a rally against shale gas exploration in the Algerian town of In-Salah, according to local officials. Two of the officers sustained serious injuries.
Protesters set ablaze the residence of the In-Salah chief, as well as a police truck and a dormitory.
Algerian oil company Sonatrach is determined to proceed with exploratory fracking despite the fact that anti-fracking rallies have been on the rise in the country since December. In-Salah is located close to the drilling site.
