This particular smackdown took place beneath the parked car of a Victorian farmer. And perhaps even more disturbing than the idea of two highly venomous creatures fighting just inches from human feet, is the fact that the spider won. Not only won, but managed to hurl the snake into its own nest, dangling above.
“It’s just mind-boggling, “Neale Postlethwaite told the Daily Mail. “I can’t believe it was actually able to stop it and then hurl it up backwards into its nest.”
Postlethwaite found the snake – an eastern brown snake – hanging from the car’s undercarriage Saturday evening. The spider, a giant red-back, was resting on top of his victim like an exhausted WWE wrestler.
“I thought the snake was dead and went to put my finger there and the snake was still alive at the time, Mr. Postlethwaite said.
When he returned in the morning, the snake was dead, most likely from a combination of spider venom and embarrassment. Its body was being devoured by snake-eating ants, which may be the third best reason not to visit Australia.
“My wife doesn’t want to drive her car until she can get an underbody car wash,” Postlethwaite said.
He said this jokingly, but in all seriousness – yeah, wash that car.
