WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham introduced a resolution on Wednesday condemning the assassination of Russia’s opposition politician Boris Nemtsov, and called on US President Barack Obama and the international community to conduct an independent investigation.
The resolution “urges the President to seek a United Nations Security Council resolution that establishes an independent investigation into the assassination.”
Moreover, McCain and Graham requested in the resolution for Obama to include new people on the visa ban list under the Magnitsky Act that Nemtsov requested to be added, according to the document.
Nemtsov was fatally shot in downtown Moscow last Friday night while walking home with a female companion. Shortly after the assassination, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the Investigative Committee, the Interior Ministry and the Federal Security Service to create a joint investigative team to solve the murder.
At present, Russian investigators are following several lines of inquiry regarding the murder, including the possibility of it being a contract killing as well as possible links to the events in Ukraine and business motives.
