MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Former Russian Ambassador to Damascus Azamat Kolmakhmudov will arrive to Istanbul, Turkey, next Wednesday to meet with representatives of the Syrian opposition, the secretary general of the Syrian National Coalition told Sputnik Thursday.
Badr Jamous said that the leaders of the Syrian opposition will meet with Kolmakhmudov on March 11.
Jamous added that the National Coalition had some critical remarks regarding the previous meeting with the Russian diplomat, when certain mechanisms were not taken into account.
"If these aspects are taken in consideration we will discuss the issue [of participation of the Syrian opposition in the next round of talks in Moscow] when he [Kolmakhmudov] arrives and see what mechanisms he will propose," Jamous said.
Jamous also said that the National Coalition wants Russia, a "great power" and an important member of the United Nations Security Council, to play an active part in the Syrian conflict settlement.
Syria is suffering from an internal conflict that began in 2011, with the country's army fighting several opposition and rebel groups.
In October, 2014, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called for resumption of reconciliation talks on Syria. Moscow later offered to host the negotiations.
The first round of Moscow talks between representatives of the Syrian government and the opposition was held from January 26 to 29.
On Tuesday, a source in the delegation of Syrian opposition groups told RIA Novosti that the second round of the Syrian peace talks in Moscow will take place in late April.
