WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Thorough investigations into allegations of an unofficial police interrogation site in Chicago should take place, and the abuses associated with the site should be stopped immediately, US Congressman Danny Davis told Sputnik.
“Every stone needs to be overturned to find out if it has been going on, and everything must be done to try to make sure it does not continue,” Davis said on Thursday.
Davis has represented for over 17 years the district in Chicago, Illinois, where the police interrogation “black site” is located.
“I would certainly be in concert with those calling for a federal Justice Department investigation as well as a local police internal investigation” into the case of the Chicago interrogation site, Davis added.
Police brought Americans to an abandoned warehouse at Chicago’s Homan Square, where it denied them legal counsel and inflicted physical abuse to obtain confessions, according to a media investigation report.
Information about the site is currently limited. Davis argued that the first step is to find out as concretely as possible whether abuses are actually taking place. If such activity by Chicago police has occurred “it should cease and desist,” Davis stated, adding that “the police department should not be involved in this kind of activity.”
An individual named Brian Jacob Church reported to The Guardian in late February that he had been held at a “domestic black site” in Chicago, which he compared to overseas US Central Intelligence Agency interrogation sites.
Reports about the Chicago police site allege that at least one individual was discovered to be unresponsive in an interview room in the facility and later pronounced dead.
The Chicago Police Department has denied that it was involved in the alleged abuses and detentions at Homan Square.
