WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US media were not present at Chicago’s “black site” protest on Thursday and only international media covered the event, Chicago Alliance Against Racist & Political Repression community organizer Frank Chapman told Sputnik.
“We had 50 people out on this cold day, and it was one of the coldest days of the year,” Chapman said on Thursday. “But, the only press was foreign press, and no US press.”
Chapman argued that people abroad seem more concerned about what is going on in the United States. “We know these practices [violating rights] are going on here and all across the country,” he added.
“If we cannot stop them turning out country into a police state, then we will have failed. We need to keep our country democratic,” he said.
The protestors are not alone, he asserted, and they received plenty of honks by fellow Chicagoans driving by.
“We were 50 people out of tens of thousands in Chicago who are against this,” Chapman concluded.
The Chicago-based advocacy groups Chicago Anonymous, Gay Liberation Network and Stop Mass Incarceration Network Chicago have planned another protest on Saturday.
The US advocacy group #Gitmo2Chicago also organized a protest on Wednesday in Asheville, North Carolina over the Chicago “black site” and has planned another protest in Los Angeles, California on Saturday.
