LONDON (Sputnik) — The Transport for London (TfL), a local government body responsible for the transport system in the United Kingdom, has banned posters on London tube for a play called Bad Jews, the Evening Standard reported Friday.
The TfL prohibited the placement of the poster in the subway, saying it feared the surge of anti-Semitism, according to the British daily.
"The advert "Bad Jews" was previously displayed on our network as our advertising contractor approved it without consulting us. It was subsequently submitted for display again and has been rejected as it contravened our advertising policy, which states that adverts will not be approved if they may cause widespread or serious offence," a spokesperson of the TfL was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
"The word "bad" in the title, in so far as it matters, doesn't mean "evil" — it means "non-observant," Producer Danny Moar told the Evening Standard, adding that "This is a form of censorship which is so weird and ironic when, in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo events, everyone marched against censorship."
The controversial poster shows the four cast members fighting. It was banned despite the fact similar adverts for the play have been previously approved.
Bad Jews by Joshua Harmon has been very popular among the theater-goers during its recent run at the St James Theater in London. It is expected to transfer to the West End's Arts Theater.
