MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Some 18 people in the northeast Indian state of Nagaland were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the lynching of a detained rape suspect, the Indian Broadcasting Network (IBN) reported Sunday.
The local administration, according to the media outlet, lifted its curfew until mid-afternoon, deployed several military and police force units to maintain order, and imposed a 48-hour mobile communication blockade.
IBN went on to say that the authorities were expected to make additional arrests as they examined the footage of Khan's murder.
The events followed the suspension of three police officials Saturday, blamed for failing to control the mob after the storming of a jail and Khan's lynching incident.
In an alarming statistic, international social justice watchdog Crowd Voice reported that over 90 women are raped in India every day. Many rapes go unreported and, with those that are documented, only 23 percent of the suspects accused of sexual assault are convicted.
