Masarat Alam, a separatist leader who had been held in detention since 2010, was released Saturday as part of the Indian-controlled region's drive to free political prisoners held without charge. On Sunday, Modi's ruling BJP party asked the local government to provide explanations for Alam's release.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The release of a leader of the separatist movement from jail in India's northwestern region of Kashmir sparked a heated exchange between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the country's parliament, the Hindustan Times reported Monday.

"I am in sync with the outrage which is being expressed in Parliament as well as the nation… We will not tolerate any step which undermines the unity of the country," Modi said addressing Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament.

The controversy over Alam's release comes on the heels of an agreement reached last week between Indian and Pakistani foreign secretaries to ensure "peace and tranquility" along the volatile border.
