MOSCOW (Sputnik) — French rail workers are set to go on strike on Monday evening, fearing that upcoming rail services reforms could lead to redundancies, the country's state-owned railway company SNCF said.
According to local media, the strike was called by the CGT union against planned rail reforms introduced to reduce debt. The new reforms intend to amalgamate 149,000 SNCF employees with 1,500 employees of the RFF rail network to cut costs. The union argues that the reform will lead to people losing their jobs without getting rid of the debt.
The strike will not be extended beyond Wednesday.
This week's strikes are not expected to be as disruptive as those that crippled France's railway system last summer. In June 2014, SNCF reportedly lost almost 80 million euros ($87 million) following clashes between riot police and protesters.
