WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Corruption by wealthy interests permeates the legislative process in the US Congress and has reached grotesque levels, Independent US Senator Bernie Sanders said at a press conference on Monday.
“If anyone doubts what goes on in Congress, that piece of legislation after piece of legislation is not done on behalf of the wealthy and large corporations, then let me respectfully tell you, you don’t know what’s going on in Washington,” Sanders stated.
Wealthy individuals and corporations are able “to purchase the candidate of their choice,” Sanders said, explaining that money in politics is a major impediment to his decision to run for president.
“It is awfully hard to run as an independent if you’re not a billionaire,” he said.
Sanders is the longest serving Independent Senator in US history, and has said he is considering running in the 2016 US presidential race.
