MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The results of the poll published in The Wall Street Journal on Monday showed that 59 percent of those who participated supported gay marriage. Support has almost doubled in the last 10 years, the newspaper said.
Support for same-sex marriage was highest among those who vote for the Democratic Party – 74 percent — and young people, according to the survey. Only 40 percent of Republican voters support gay marriage, the poll found.
In 2013, the US Supreme Court ruled that a section of the country's Defense of Marriage Act barring federal recognition of same-sex marriages was unconstitutional.
Thirty-seven states and the District of Columbia, home to some 70 percent of the US population, currently allow same-sex marriages.
