WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Washington does not have information to confirm press reports that US and Israeli military advisors were arrested while allegedly aiding Islamic State (IS) terrorists in Iraq, a US State Department official told Sputnik on Tuesday.
Iran’s Tasnim News Agency reported earlier that Iraqi counter-terrorism forces arrested four foreign military advisors from the United States and Israel, who were allegedly aiding the IS.
The advisors were reportedly captured in an operation codenamed "The Sting of a Scorpion" in a headquarters from where the IS organized its military operations in Iraq’s Northern Province of Nineveh.
The US is leading a coalition of more than 60 nations and has been launching airstrikes against the IS in Iraq since last August, and in Syria since September.
The United States and its allies agreed to train and equip Syrian opposition fighters as part of their efforts to fight the IS.
