WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States extended the Mutual Fisheries Agreement with Russia, US President Barack Obama stated in a letter addressed Speaker of the US House of Representatives and the President of the US Senate.
“In accordance with the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, I transmit herewith an Agreement between the government of the United States and the government of the Russian Federation,” Obama said in the letter on Tuesday.
The Agreement is aimed at maintaining a fisheries relationship that benefits both countries.
Obama explained that he extended the original Mutual Fisheries Agreement signed in 1988 between the United States and the Soviet Union.
Obama noted that the present agreement, which was effected by an exchange of notes in Moscow on July 31, 2013, and December 10, 2013, extends the Mutual Fisheries Agreement until December 31, 2018.
The United States and Russia cooperate on scientific research, reciprocal allocation of surplus fish resources, cooperation on fishery issues of mutual concern, as well as on addressing Illegal and unregulated fishing activities.
