MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Following two days of Libya talks held in Algeria, the participants affirmed commitment to reject all forms of foreign interference and to combine efforts in a struggle against terrorist groups including the Islamic State (ISIL), the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said Wednesday
“The participants affirmed the pledge to protect the national and territorial unity, sovereignty and independence of Libya, as well as its full control over its international borders, and the rejection of all forms of foreign interference,” UNSMIL said in a statement published Wednesday on its website.
Requests by the Torbuk-based government for the lifting of the UN Security Council arms embargo or for exemptions from it remained unacted upon.
Libya has been in crisis since the 2011 overthrow of long-term leader Muammar Gaddafi and the subsequent civil war. There are now two rival governments in the country, one in Tripoli and one in Tobruk.
Established in September, 2011 UNSMIL aims to support the internationally-recognized Libyan government in Tobruk in promoting the rule of law, protecting human rights and restoring public security. The mission also mediates talks between Libya's rival factions.
