MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The ceasefire is holding broadly along the contact line in eastern Ukraine with the exception of some key strategic points where minor clashes occur, a senior international monitor told reporters Thursday.
"The ceasefire holds broadly along the long contact line, which, as you all know, is almost 500 kilometers long. We see that at some strategic points, such as Shirokine or the Donetsk Airport, the fighting is continuing," Alexander Hug, a deputy chief monitor of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, said.
"However, this relative stability at the moment is on thin ice," he added.
Ceasefire in Ukraine's conflict-torn Donbas region was stipulated by an agreement worked out by the leaders of Russia, France, Ukraine and Germany in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, and later signed by the envoys of the independence supporters and Kiev. The ceasefire came into force on February 15.
The new Minsk agreement came in the wake of simmering tensions in Donbas that continued despite a previous truce deal signed in September 2014.
Since the start of the conflict in eastern Ukraine in April 2014, more than 6,000 people have been killed, according to the UN estimates.
