"[The European Parliament] requests an independent international investigation into the murder; takes the view that the instruments available within the framework of the OSCE, the Council of Europe and the United Nations would help to ensure an impartial and fair investigation," the joint motion for the resolution said.
The draft resolution was put forward by members of the five largest European Parliamentary factions, namely European People's Party (EPP), Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) and The Greens–European Free Alliance (Greens–EFA).
Shortly after the assassination, Russian President Vladimir Putin commissioned the Interior Ministry, the Investigative Committee, and the Federal Security Service to set up a joint investigation team.
Five men have been arrested on suspicion of being involved in the politician's murder. Tamerlan Eskerkhanov, Khamzat Bakhayev, Zaur Dadayev, Anzor Gubashev and his brother Shagid are currently the prime suspects in the killing.
