WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Ferguson, Missouri authorities called on the residents to keep the peace following the shooting of two police officers, the Ferguson Mayor and City Council said in a statement on Thursday.
“We ask our residents and clergy in this area to partner with us as we make our way through this process [of reforms]… Please stand with us as we ask for peace, prayer, and unity. Together we can heal and unite this community,” the statement read.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the officers and their families who were injured last night. This act of violence against police and residents has no place in our community or our country,” the statement said.
The St. Louis County Police Department is conducting an investigation into the shooting, the statement added.
St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said that both policemen had been brought to a local hospital, and did not sustain “remarkable long-term injuries.”
Belmar added that a manhunt is underway to find a shooter.
US Attorney General Eric Holder said the US Department of Justice is ready to provide any assistance in the ongoing investigation.
