WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Detainees at the US Guantanamo Bay prison facility attack personnel and spray them with bodily fluids, US Marine Corps General John Kelly said during a press conference.
“They [the detainees] concoct a cocktail. Usually its feces, urine, sperm, vomit… When the guard comes to, say, take their trash… they will splash them,” Kelly said on Thursday. “Another form is simply if they can assault the guards physically, they will do that.”
The Marine Corps General noted the detainees who are in the single cells usually carry out the assaults.
John Kelly also noted that the detention facility will continue to take care of the remaining prisoners there until US President Barack Obama decides to close it, US General stated at a press conference.
“Certainly the President wants to close it [Guantanamo] and until that happens, I will take care of those prisoners in a dignified way that sees to their every need,” Kelly said.
Kelly, who is in charge at the US Defense Department for defense cooperation among 45 nations in Central and South America and the Caribbean, explained that the Guantanamo Naval base facility was “hugely useful” for the United States in housing refugees particularly from Cuba and Haiti.
The Guantanamo Bay detention facility was created in 2002 following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States. The military prison has routinely been criticized by human rights advocates for alleged inhumane conditions of imprisonment, including the use of torture.
In 2009, Obama issued an Executive Order to review the status of all Guantanamo Bay detainees and to shut down the detention facilities there. Since Obama’s review, the number of detainees has been nearly cut in half, but the complete shutdown has not taken place yet. Currently, there are 122 detainees at Guantanamo Bay.
