MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) has requested that a court sends opposition blogger Alexei Navalny to jail for stealing timber from state-run company KirovLes, because he violated the terms of his suspended sentence, a court spokeswoman told RIA Novosti Friday.
“A court received a FSIN notification with a request to cancel a suspended sentence for Alexei Navalny,” the spokeswoman said.
In February, Navalny violated the terms of his suspended sentence when he was sentenced to 15 days of administrative arrest for the unauthorized distribution of leaflets promoting an anti-Kremlin rally.
Alexei Navalny, a Russian blogger, was convicted in 2012 of setting up a criminal scheme to steal timber from KirovLes, which the prosecution argued resulted in a $255,000 loss to the regional budget. The court handed down a five-year prison term to Navalny, but the sentence was eventually suspended.
In December, Navalny was given another suspended sentence of 3.5 years for the embezzlement of 30 million rubles ($500,000) from the Yves Rocher cosmetics company and the Multifunctional Processing Company.
