WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States conducted a drone strike in Southern Somalia and killed the terrorist group al-Shabaab's senior commander Adan Garar, according to media reports.
Garar, who is responsible for the December 2013 attack on the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, was killed on Thursday, CBS News said on Friday.
Four al-Shabaab terrorists staged the mall attack in which 67 people died.
In February 2015, al-Shabaab posted a video, urging attacks on shopping centres in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
The al-Shabaab group has been fighting for over seven years to impose an Islamic state in Somalia.
Somalia has been without an effective government since the overthrow of the Revolutionary Socialist Party in 1991. The internationally-recognized federal government controls only the capital city of Mogadishu and part of central Somalia. The other areas in the country are self-governing or controlled by unrecognised state formations.
