A group of con men has gone on trial for stealing $1.37 by selling prime real estate in Rome, including historic edifices housing the US Embassy in Italy and the UN food agency (FAO) headquarters, to an unsuspecting businessman from Germany.

The businessman, residing in Monaco, became embroiled in the scam, spanning several months, in 2008. He contacted a fake real estate agent Wolfgang Kroll, 57, who offered to sell the Porta di Roma shopping center.

After successfully closing the deal, he decided to purchase the US embassy building on Via Veneto for $610,000 and the FAO complex on Viale delle Terme di Caracalla for $630,000.

Kroll was assisted by Donato Perazzolo, who impersonated a bank employee, and Walter Baccini in the role of a government official working at Italy's Minister of the Interior. Anna Lisa Morganti was also involved in the big con.

The four con artists were charged with fraud and forgery on Friday.
