The protests were sparked by the current Indian government's intention to revise existing land law in the country. The draft legislation foresees easier rules to acquire farmer land for infrastructure projects. Farmers fear that under the bill they will not be adequately compensated.
The protest was organized by the Indian National Congress, opponents of the current government led by the Indian People's Party. The protesters left the village of Bhatta-Parsaul in northern India on Friday and reached Rajghat district in New Delhi on Monday morning.
"We are completely against the amendments. In (proposed) law, farmers don't have the right to take decision regarding their own land," leader of Congress party Jairam Ramesh said as quoted by India Today.
Last week, the lower house of Indian parliament made nine amendments to the draft legislation, which is due to pass to the upper house this week.
