Ten men were detained as a result of the attack on a 74-year-old woman. Six robbers allegedly broke into a convent in Ranaghat in West Bengal Sunday, sexually assaulted a nun and escaped with stolen money, according to the police reports.
Approximately 4,000 people of different age held a solidarity rally at the main church in the town on Monday.
The nun is currently undergoing treatment in a Kolkata hospital.
"We hope that the perpetrators will be swiftly brought to justice," Kolkata's Archbishop Thomas D'Souza said. "We stand in solidarity with the victim."
Similar demonstrations were also held in state capital Kolkata and in New Delhi. Banners, carried by the protestors, read "We Want Justice" and "Shame".
