18:13 GMT 16.03.2015 (Updated: 20:40 GMT 16.03.2015) Diplomats from Iran, the European Union, France, Germany and Britain met in Brussels to discuss Iran's nuclear program.
BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – The top diplomats of Iran, the European Union, France, Germany and the United Kingdom met in Brussels Monday evening to discuss Tehran’s controversial nuclear program.
“The meeting has just begun,” a spokesperson for the European External Action Service told RIA Novosti.
The talks were preceded by a brief meeting of the EU foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
Zarif also met with US Secretary of State John Kerry in the city of Lausanne earlier in the day.
Diplomatic efforts to clinch a deal ensuring Tehran's nuclear aspirations do not include the development of nuclear weapons have picked up with the approaching deadline for a framework deal at the end of this month.
By July, the P5+1 group of international negotiators hope to reach a comprehensive long-term agreement with Iran. The group consists of five UN Security Council members – Russia, the United States, France, China and the United Kingdom – as well as Germany.
