The international campaign to tackle the Islamic State may last decades if not a generation, Australia's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop warned.

"We have no choice but to be part of this struggle against extremism in all its forms, both home and abroad," she said in a speech at the Institute for Regional Security, calling the radical Sunni group Daesh, a term the militants supposedly dislike.
Bishop later elaborated, saying the international community is "battling an idea, a concept, an ideology and so this countering violent extremism will take quite some time."
