FRANKFURT (Sputnik) — The ongoing violent Blockupy protests in Frankfurt will not affect the opening of the new $1-billion European Central Bank (ECB) office headquarters in the city, the Bank’s spokesman told Sputnik on Wednesday.

“The ECB is fully operational and the inauguration event today is taking place as planned” Ronan Sheridan, Principal Press Officer of the ECB Directorate General Communications & Language Services, said.
Earlier, a Blockupy spokeswoman told RIA Novosti that at least 300 protesters had broken through a police cordon around ECB's new high-rise headquarters in downtown Frankfurt.

Blockupy is a left-wing political group protesting EU austerity policies, particularly those imposed recently on Greece.
